Why is vegetable-tanned leather the most eco-responsible leather?

For Biche Maison Dréan, as for the leading French and Italian top-of-the-range brands, there's no doubt about it!

Biche Maison Dréan uses full-grain leather, not split or “chipboard” leather coated with plastic. Our leather is primarily Italian calfskin, tanned with natural plant products like oak or sumac leaves and seeds. The process is delicate and can take up to three weeks, resulting in a leather that is unique, sustainable, and safe for both the environment and tannery workers.

Vegetable-tanned leather is a luxurious and eco-conscious choice, unlike most leather today, 85% is chemically tanned with chrome and aluminum salts, which harm the environment and workers. By using beautiful leather from food-industry byproducts, free from chemicals and plastic coatings, Biche bags offer a way to enjoy luxury responsibly.

Why are vegan “leathers” not so eco-friendly?

Until a true breakthrough arrives, vegan “leathers”, made from apple, cactus, or mushroom fibers, are mixed with chemicals, glues, and plastic coatings like polyurethane to make them waterproof. This creates microplastics that pollute oceans and results in materials that crack, peel, or warp over time. Moisturizing plastic won’t stop aging, and producing more synthetic materials only adds to waste.

That said, research continues to find a beautiful, durable, pollutant-free vegan material, and when it exists, Biche Maison Dréan will embrace it.

For now, vegetable-tanned leather remains unmatched. Eco-conscious and chemical-free, it ages gracefully, developing a soft, protective patina after a few months. Keep your bag away from rain and scratches initially, and it will grow more resilient over time. With proper care, your Biche bag is repairable and timeless, ready to be passed down for generations.

Sustainable, high-quality leather is a responsible and stylish choice, luxury that respects both the planet and your personal style.
