Why vegetable-tanned leather?
Biche Maison Dréan uses full-grain leather, not split or “chipboard” leather coated with plastic. Our leather is primarily Italian calfskin, tanned with natural plant products like oak or sumac leaves and seeds. The process is delicate and can take up to three weeks, resulting in a leather that is unique, sustainable, and safe for both the environment and tannery workers.

Why vegan “leathers” are not so eco-friendly
Until a true breakthrough arrives, vegan “leathers”, made from apple, cactus, or mushroom fibers, are mixed with chemicals, glues, and plastic coatings like polyurethane to make them waterproof. This creates microplastics that pollute oceans and results in materials that crack, peel, or warp over time. Moisturizing plastic won’t stop aging, and producing more synthetic materials only adds to waste.
Notre objectif est que chaque client soit totalement satisfait de son achat. Si ce n'est pas le cas, faites-le nous savoir et nous ferons de notre mieux pour trouver une solution avec vous.
Because it is the most beautiful and responsible leather available today.
Vegetable tanning uses natural extracts from oak, mimosa, or sumac instead of chemicals. The process is slow and delicate—sometimes taking up to three weeks—but it results in leather that is durable, rich, and safe for both the environment and the artisans who work it.
It’s the tanning method chosen by the highest-end French and Italian leather houses… and by Biche.
ver 85% of the world’s leather is chemically tanned with chrome or aluminum salts.
These substances pollute water, harm tannery workers, and create waste that cannot be recycled.
Vegetable tanning, on the other hand:
It’s a responsible choice that respects the planet as much as your skin.
Full-grain leather is the noblest part of the hide.
We never use split leather or “reconstructed” leather coated in plastic.
Full-grain calfskin develops character with time, ages beautifully, and becomes more supple and more luminous.
It is a living material — unique, repairable, and designed to last generations.
Beautifully.
Vegetable-tanned leather develops a soft, warm patina that reflects your life.
After a few months, it becomes more resistant, more flexible, and naturally protected.
It is the opposite of synthetic materials that crack, peel, or warp — true leather only becomes better with time.
Nourish
Your bag is crafted from full-grain calf leather, tanned and coloured by hand.
To keep it supple and luminous, nourish it occasionally with a neutral leather cream.
A little goes a long way — apply sparingly and buff gently with a soft cloth.
Recommended Products
For coloured leathers (black or dark shades), a tiny touch of coloured polish can revive depth and shine in the first months.
For natural leather, use a colourless balm only.
Don’t be surprised if the leather darkens slightly during application — it will dry back to its beautiful soft golden hue.
Our favourite:
Saphir (France) — exquisite quality, clean formulation, and a scent we adore.
How often ?
1–2 times a year is enough.
Over-conditioning is unnecessary: vegetable-tanned leather is naturally rich.
Let it breathe, let it evolve.
The First Months
During its first weeks, your bag is discovering your rhythm — like a beautiful pair of shoes.
Avoid heavy rain and rough surfaces for a little while.
As the patina forms, the leather becomes naturally more resistant and confident.
How the Colour Evolves
Vegetable-tanned leather develops a soft, warm patina unique to your life.
Natural shades deepen into a honeyed glow.
Darker colours become smoother, shinier, and more luminous.
Your bag doesn’t just age — it matures.
Staining? (Stain Care)
STEP 1 — Light Stains
Do not panic, leather is more forgiving than you think.
For surface marks, apply a small amount of Saphir’s Reno Mat using a cotton pad.
Dab gently and let it sit for no more than 10 minutes.
Reno Mat will lift the stain, but because it slightly dries the leather, always nourish afterwards.
Grease is trickier, but the solution is wonderfully simple:
sprinkle terre de Sommières (montmorillonite/bentonite clay).
If you don’t have any, baby powder works too.
Let it absorb overnight, then brush lightly and nourish.
Once your bag has lived a little and developed its patina (yes… that patina again),
it becomes naturally more resistant.
Stains are less likely to absorb, colours stabilise, and the leather gains confidence.
How Your Leather Evolves
It ages the way beautiful things should — slowly, naturally, and with intention.
Vegetable-tanned leather softens with your daily gestures, deepens in colour with sunlight, and gains a delicate sheen with time.
Every mark becomes part of its story, every month adds character.
No two Biche bags will ever age in the same way — and that is the magic.
Like any precious piece, your bag needs a gentle introduction to the world.
During the first weeks, avoid heavy rain, rough surfaces, and dark denim that may transfer colour.
This is simply the leather’s “settling period.”
Once the patina begins to form, the leather becomes more confident, more resilient, and much easier to live with every day.
A patina is the signature of true full-grain leather, free from plastic coatings or chemical films.
Only natural, vegetable-tanned leather can reveal such depth and beauty.
It forms through touch, light, and time — a quiet conversation between you and your bag.
The more you wear it, the more luminous and personal it becomes.
Absolutely.
Because we use full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather — the most noble part of the hide — your bag can be cleaned, nourished, polished, and even re-stitched by any skilled leather artisan.
